The Smart Stuff

This is a youth-development program which uses evidence-based programming structured to address self-esteem, positive body image, and social-emotional skills competence. Circus arts programs provide a physical activity environment in which transgender and gender expansive youth experience a sense of belonging.

The program will take place Spring 2022, culminating in June to celebrate Pride Month. In-person group classes meet weekly for a duration of ten sessions to form the troupe and train the youth in circus skills as well as teaching and performance techniques. The young artist-athletes will then lead two workshops: one for children or youth in YGP that did not participate in the program and one for friends and family. The grand finale will be one youth-created performance, open to the public. The performance will live-stream on Zoom for community members who are unable to attend in person.

Classes will meet in-person and follow state, local, and facilities mandates and recommendations for COVID-19 safety.

Target population for circus classes includes youth/young adults who identify with transgender or gender expansive experience.

Classes include adaptive activities for individuals with diverse physical, cognitive, and developmental needs.
